![]() ![]() In 1965-66, with his doctorate in hand, he went to the University of Hawaii, where he taught in the Classics program for seventeen years, a program that he chaired for the first thirteen years of his tenure. His dissertation topic grew out of his interest in the seizure of power by dictators. Burns studied Roman philosophy with Professor William Grummel, with whom he wrote his dissertation, and Greek philosophy with Professor John McDiarmid, whose classes kindled his interest in Greek scientific/philosophic thought. ![]() After serving in the United States Army during World War II, he traveled to Seattle, where, while working for the Boeing Company, he earned his degrees at the University of Washington. Burns held a variety of jobs during the 1930s and 1940s: a croupier in the casinos of Austria, a waiter and bartender in the restaurants of New York, and a ski instructor in the hills of Pennsylvania. He and his bride Stella (they would share almost fifty years of married life) barely escaped the Nazi invasion of Austria by skiing to Switzerland while in France they obtained visas to emigrate to America. In 2021, Leonhard Birnbaum was appointed to his current role as CEO of E.ON SE. From 2019 to 2020, he was also Chairman of the Board of Management of innogy SE. From 2018 until 2021 he was responsible for the innogy integration project. In 2013, Leonhard Birnbaum was appointed as member of the Board of Management of E.ON SE and took on a variety of responsibilities within the Board. He served as Chief Strategy Officer and as RWE Group’s Chief Commercial Officer until 2013. In 2008, he joined RWE AG and was appointed to the Board of Management the same year. After holding various positions – including at McKinsey’s office in Houston, USA – he was Senior Partner for the energy and industrial sector. Leonhard Birnbaum began his professional career as a management consultant at McKinsey in Düsseldorf. After a subsequent period of academic work at the Karlsruhe Research Centre, he obtained a doctorate from the University of Cottbus. He studied chemical engineering in Karlsruhe. Leonhard Birnbaum was born in Ludwigshafen, Germany, on February 19, 1967. ![]()
